Selby’s Commitment to Community and Sustainability: Our CSR Journey
At Selby, our story is deeply connected to the well-being of our people and the land we call home. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) isn’t a side project—it’s a vital thread woven through every part of our business. Our family’s legacy guides us to go beyond business as usual, investing in initiatives that bring lasting value to our staff, community, and environment.
Leading with Environmental Stewardship
Our commitment starts with sustainable agriculture that respects the land and preserves natural resources. Selby operates under a comprehensive environmental management system, continuously adopting practices that protect the ecosystem we depend on. Investments in renewable energy are central to our mission. Through partnerships with organisations like Albert Heijn and its foundation, we’ve implemented solar installations, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and moving closer to a carbon-neutral future. Education projects teach residents how to maintain solar systems and embrace sustainable living, empowering our community to take action for the environment.
Alongside our renewable energy focus, we conserve water, manage biological pest control, and embrace recycling and responsible waste management. These efforts contribute to a circular economy, with every innovation designed to decrease waste, conserve resources, and lower our carbon footprint.
Empowering People and Promoting Well-Being
Our employees are our family. Selby ensures safe, comfortable, and energy-responsible housing for permanent and seasonal workers. Each home is thoughtfully equipped with private and communal areas, reliable electricity, and amenities that promote dignity and a sense of belonging. Individual electricity meters and gas cookers encourage fair, sustainable use and further reduce environmental impact.
Comprehensive staff welfare includes a dedicated clinic providing healthcare on site, a creche for young children, and a fully equipped gym to support physical and mental health. These facilities, along with educational and recreational options such as sports leagues—including our all-female football team—promote an active, balanced lifestyle.
Building a Stronger Community
Outreach doesn’t end at our gates. Selby’s community center serves as a lively hub for learning, recreation, and spiritual engagement—a space where residents gather, share meals, and participate in educational or faith-based activities. Our mini-mart is a non-profit shop supporting local families by improving access to daily essentials.
Education support extends with extra lessons for children, ongoing skills development, and youth-focused programs on resilience, health, and leadership. We run psychosocial support initiatives in collaboration with NGOs like Miracle Missions and Vimba Zimbabwe, addressing everything from mental well-being to healthy relationships and life skills for both girls and boys.
Creating Opportunities and Lasting Impact
Communal horse riding, dance groups, and after-school safe spaces help children and teens grow in confidence, creativity, and self-esteem. Conservation agriculture classes reinforce respect for the land—bridging environmental action with social empowerment. Selby also supports job creation and economic stability through staff housing upgrades, investment in local infrastructure, and sustainable supply chains.
A Promise for the Future
Our vision for CSR is holistic: environmental stewardship, social development, and economic opportunity come together, creating a model for lasting, positive change. Every action and partnership is guided by our belief that true business success comes from growing with and for the community, contributing to a brighter, greener Zimbabwe.
At Selby, caring for the land and its people is not just what we do—it’s who we are. That’s the spirit behind every crop harvested, every home improved, and every young mind inspired for generations to come.
